Rachel Ashwell – Her Life’s Work

Rachel Ashwell is the owner and founder of Shabby Chic, a chain of stores and product lines for the home that believes in the beauty of imperfection.  Her design style combines practicality, character, and a bit of sophistication. Ashwell was born in Cambridge, England in 1959.  She was involved in antiques from an early age.  Her mother restored antique dolls and teddy bears and her father was a secondhand, rare book dealer.  Ashwell and her sister accompanied their parents on shopping trips to flea markets and antiques stores.  She learned how to figure out what was worth buying and what wasn’t, as well as how to restore pieces without ruining the character.  At 13, Ashwell began selling items in antique markets in England.

In 1983, Rachel Ashwell moved to the United States and settled in California.  She began a career in the entertainment business as a set designer and wardrobe stylist.  But once her first child was born, she left her career to raise her two children.  At home, Ashwell made washable, stylish slipcovers for her furniture, items that could withstand the wear and tear of children and pets.  Friends admired her style and began requesting slipcovers for themselves.  When she and her husband divorced, Ashwell decided to market her design skills and opened her first store.

In 1989, Rachel Ashwell opened her first Shabby Chic store with money she borrowed from her ex-husband.  Besides slipcovers, she filled the store with items found at flea markets and garage sales.  Although she refinished the antique furniture finds by sanding and painting, she carefully kept the character of each piece.  She made sure furniture pieces were well-built, but viewed flaws as opportunities to be creative.  Ashwell stayed true to her design style of easy, elegant, and practical.

Since that first store, Rachel Ashwell has opened five more Shabby Chic stores.  She has expanded her product line to include home textiles, such as sheets and fabrics; bedding; new furniture that resembles restored pieces; pajamas; aromatherapy products; baby bedding and accessories; and accessory items such as chair pads and lampshades.  She has started trends that other companies have followed, including knitted bed sheets and new, distressed furniture.  She has also written a number of books.  She has taken her philosophy of elegant simplicity combined with practicality and found success.  Ashwell currently lives in California with her two children.

Rachel Ashwell – Shabby Chic – How it All Began

Anyone who knows anything about home design should be somewhat familiar with the shabby chic, which was created in the latter part of the 1980s. Rachel Ashwell was 16 years old when she decided that her life needed some kind of change. She dropped out of high school and became a set designer and also a wardrobe specialist. That was until the time she turned 27 years old and created the shabby chic interior design company.

People may consider the story of Rachel Ashwell to be a rags to riches type of story. She was born to a father who was an unusual used book dealer. Her mother would restore antique dolls. As you can see, has spent much of her life in secondhand stores as well as flea markets. She learned at a very young age how to take something that someone else had no use for and make it into something fabulous.

Rachel Ashwell had only been living in the United States for four years when she created the shabby chic company. At first, she made her the designs for her own personal use. This was only until she guests in her home who quickly noticed these beautiful items that she had handmade. It was at this point she began to sell her items to others. It did not take very long for her product line to take off. Two years later she opened her very first store called the shabby chic in Santa Monica. Two years after this, she opened three more stores. One in San Francisco, the next in New York City and the third in Chicago.

Rachel Ashwell and the shabby chic look is perhaps most famous for distressed furniture. She was the first to purposely make her furniture look old and worn out. At shabby chic stores, you will be able to purchase everything from a lampshade to a child’s backpack, and also bedding.

The sensation has really taken over the nation. People love this wonderful lady. They loved her enough to give her own television show on the E! Network. Everywhere you go, there is a good chance that you will see something that Rachel Ashwell has had a hand in.

Product Description

Valuable flea market finds... A peeling, antioue vanity in muted sea green... An elegant, cracked chandelier... An enormous, slipcovered sofa with deep, cushions... Comfort, the beauty of imperfections, the allure of time-worn objects, and the appeal of simple practical living: these are the cornerstones of what has come to be known as the Shabby Chic style. Like the cozy familiarity of a well-worn pair of faded jeans, the dilapidated elegance of an Italian viIla, or the worn grandeur of faded velvets and mismatched floral china handed down from your grandmother's attic, the Shabby Chic style is a revived appreciation for what is used, well-loved, and worn. It is a respect for natural evolution and a regard for what is easy and sensible. The hundreds of lavish photographs in this book invite you inside the unique world of Shabby Chic. Rachel Ashwell, founder of theShabby Chic home decor stores, for the first time provides her invaluable and much-sought-after advice on how to re-create Shabby Chic style in your own home. With engaging text and easy-to- follow instructions, Rachel details the Shabby Chic basics in a way that will put even the most apprehensive or novice decorators at ease. From flowers to fabrics to lighting, Rachel illuminates all of the elements essential to this unpretentious yet truly exquisite style. A behind-the-scenes look at a flea market lets readers in on Rachel's personal secrets of how to cull hidden treasures from flea market trash--an old trunk, its paint peeling around the edges, can be given new life as a coffee table, while a chipped white iron salvage piece becomes the perfect frame for a vintage mirror. This book tells you not only how to restore these pieces but how to find the perfect place for them in your home. Gorgeous color photographs and accompanying text reveal how this relaxed look works with a variety of different styles, from Victorian to Mediterranean to contemporary.

Product Description

"Flea Market Style" gives you all the information and advice you need to furnish and decorate your home with "found" objects instead of new items bought in stores. Emily Chalmers and Ali Hanan explain how to find fresh and unexpected uses of second-hand pieces and antiques, and reveal how to mix old and new with flair and panache. The first part of the book, Flea Market Finds, looks at household goods, from fabrics and furniture to china, kitchenware, glass and lighting, and describes how to find special objects and indentify them on the basis of their quality, character, resillience, colour, and texture. The authors advocate a subtle mixing of styles, patterns, and colours, and emphasize the beauty of objects that have seen a bit of life. They explain how to locate bargain copies of modern classics--or the real things--and how to mix flea-market or thrift-store finds with high-end basics. The second part of the book, Putting It All Together, shows how to incorporate the style in every room--from the spaces where you cook, eat, sleep, or relax to bathing spaces and work spaces. The book ends with an extensive directory of suppliers. -Add a large dose of originality to your home--at low cost. -Lively text illustrated with Debi Treloar's inspirational photographs.
